Private Rudy Spruance is not the happiest of soldiers, a man who is beginning to realise that the greatest mistake he ever made was joining up. Posted to an army hospital in the frozen wastes of the Arctic Rudy's world would seem to have no end of unpleasant surprises in store for him. This is no ordinary base, for a start everyone to a man is pretty well short of a full picnic, and there are some very unpleasant things going on down in the basement, it's beginning to look like a close race as to which Rudy loses first, his sanity or his life. Playing at first more like Catch 22, then like a downbeat M*A*S*H and then slowly descending into medical horror Guy X lacks the courage of its convictions (and perhaps the satirical wit of those it seeks to emulate) but it is nonetheless a quirky and weirdly likable mess of a movie.
